]]>Choosing the right timber for your indoor dining table is an important decision. Not only does it affect the aesthetics of your dining room, but it also impacts the durability, longevity, maintenance, and sustainability of your table. With so many options available, it can be overwhelming to decide.
The natural wood grain is one of the most defining and beautiful features of timber dining tables. It is what gives each table its unique character and personality. The colour and finish of a timber dining table are critical elements in its aesthetics. Having the right finish can enhance the natural beauty of the wood grain, elevating your entire dining space.
When matching the table colour and finish to your decor, consider the colours of the room and other furniture pieces. The table should complement the overall style of the space while adding an element of warmth and character.
When it comes to dining tables, timber is a popular and enduring choice. It adds a sought-after warmth and character to a room whilst setting the standards for durability and stability.
It is important to consider the craftsmanship and sturdiness of a timber table when purchasing. A well-made timber dining table is a strong foundation for any family.
When choosing the right size and shape for your dining room, it's essential to consider the size of the room, the size of your ideal dining chairs, the number of people you will be seating regularly and while entertaining. Rectangular tables are a classic choice and work well in almost every space. Square or round tables can be a suitable alternative if your space does not allow for a rectangular table.
Your dining table is the centrepiece of the room, so having an appropriately sized table is an important box to tick. You might compliment your space with other furniture and decors, but keep in mind that a ‘dining room’ is exactly that!
Knowing that your table is made ethically and sustainably is important to consider when searching for a dining table.
Purchasing Australian-made furniture with locally supplied materials is a fantastic way to support the national economy through small businesses, reduce your carbon footprint and ensure the quality of your table is of the highest standards.
Arcadia Dining Table Setting
The durability and strength of your dining table are essential factors to consider when selecting the right timber. Your table needs to be able to withstand regular use and resist wear and tear over time.
The strength and durability of your dining table will be influenced by the timber you choose. Hardwoods are known for their durability and can withstand heavy use, showing less wear than other softer woods, which are more susceptible to dents and scratches.
Messmate is an Australian hardwood species native to Victoria and the southern tablelands of New South Wales. It has gained popularity in recent years due to its unique and beautiful dark grain patterns, prominent dark timber veins that contrast with the natural light brown of the timber, and natural resistance to insect damage and decay.
Messmate Natural Timber Dining Table
Tasmanian Oak is a hardwood timber that is native to the southern island of Tasmania, Australia. It is a popular choice for furniture makers, builders, and architects due to its beautiful appearance, strength, and versatility. Tasmanian Oak is known for its pale light straw colour, fine straight-wavy grain, and beautiful natural sheen.
Tasmanian Oak Natural Dining Table
Mahogany is a hardwood that is widely recognized for its beauty, durability, and versatility. It has been a popular choice for furniture makers and craftsmen for centuries, being used in a wide range of furniture designs worldwide. Mahogany is renowned in traditional style furniture, leading to a consistent demand in the furniture industry for ornate statement pieces.
Mahogany Indoor Dining Table
At Woodbury Furniture, we believe that your dining table should be more than just a functional piece of furniture. It should be a statement piece that reflects your personal style and adds character to your home.
We take pride in offering our customers a wide variety of options when it comes to choosing the perfect dining table for their home. Our Australian Messmate and Tasmanian Oak tables are sourced locally and are of the highest quality. Designed and made in Australia using skilled craftsmanship and techniques to create unique, sophisticated, contemporary pieces.
Our Mahogany dining furniture exhibits a traditional yet timeless appeal. The two staple timber stains were selected specifically to compliment the true beauty of the genuine Mahogany timber. Our classic designs, gracefully handcrafted, are promised to add an unparalleled elegance to your home.
In addition to our established dining tables, we have a selection of matching buffets and console tables, but if you can’t find exactly what you’re looking for, we do offer the option of custom-made furniture. Are you picturing an al fresco feast with all your favourite people? Are you dreaming about some me-time in the sun while lounging on your outdoor sofa? Consider a few key elements – positioning, colour scheme, size and finishes - to make sure that you get exactly what you want from your space.
If you’re fortunate enough to have enough space for both a dining and a lounging set, the most significant decision you’ll have to make is whether or not you want them to match. For example, you can match our teak outdoor lounges with a reclaimed teak outdoor dining table and chairs to create the ultimate rustic feel. The beautiful, rich timber lines will add depth to your outdoor furniture, and because teak has high oil content and is naturally water-repellent, you know our furniture will last for years.
The advantage of using one material for both your dining and lounging areas is that you get a seamless, unified look outdoors. Alternatively, you can mix and match materials for a bespoke look. Using different furniture selections also helps in designating areas for dining and lounging clearly.
Choose your favourite style from our wooden outdoor lounge collection and pair it with a sturdy aluminium dining table to infuse your outdoors with a contemporary vibe. You’ll still get the natural look of a teak table top, but the aluminium frame makes our dining tables easy to clean, ensuring they stay looking fresh for years to come.
If you need more inspiration for your backyard oasis, start with the style of what's already in and around your home. Take special note of indoor or outdoor areas and how they interact. Make sure to explore elements like landscaping or materials used in your garden decor — these can help you decide on a unifying theme that ties everything together.
Whilst some homeowners are lucky to have enough space for both a dining and a lounging area; some houses can only fit one or the other. So how do you choose?
The Juliet Outdoor Lounge Collection
When planning your lounge area, consider its positioning within your space. Make sure it takes advantage of pleasant views and optimal levels of sunlight or shade, according to your preference. If you have room for just one piece of furniture, take advantage of the spacious and comfortable cushions on our 3-seater outdoor lounges. They’re the perfect size for entertaining a small group of friends and for lazy afternoons when you just want to relax and curl up with a good book.
Add one of our 2-seater outdoor lounges and a couple of lounge chairs, and you’ve easily recreated an indoor living room outdoors. Our outdoor lounge sets come in various styles and sizes that you can choose from — with teak, aluminium and wooden selections, we make it easy to go from contemporary and modern to rustic and boho.
Consider as well the people who will be spending the most time in your outdoor lounges. For example, if you have elderly folks at home, you must ensure they can easily get in and out of the lounge chairs. They might appreciate our Wentworth Arm Chair with its thick arms and curved base. The finely sanded finish on the A-grade teak feels incredible to the touch and will age gracefully into a stunning silver-grey patina.
The biggest advantage of choosing an outdoor lounge area over a dining set is that you get something versatile. Your space can easily go from a cosy reading nook to an entertaining area for guests during intimate gatherings, and everyone is sure to be comfortable.
Make the most of your outdoor fun this summer with eye-catching furniture that sets a beautiful tone for family gatherings! Whether you're hosting BBQs, dinners or Sunday brunches — take some time to find outdoor dining tables and chairs that will create an unforgettable experience.
When it comes to selecting the right dining table size for your outdoor space, there are a few things you'll want to consider. Aim for at least one metre of clearance between furniture and walls or other furnishings, ensuring enough room when people pull out their chairs. And keep safety in mind — if the setup is near doorways, paths or barbecues, ensure plenty of space for people to walk around comfortably.
If you're pressed for space but still want to host a crowd, think about using outdoor bench seating. Not only will it keep your guests close and connected, but when the party's over, these narrow armless seats can slide away in no time, so you get plenty of extra space. It truly is an ideal option for any get-together.
Functionality and design are the main benefits when you choose the right outdoor dining setting. You get an outdoor space that can be an extension of your dining room during parties and an alternative dining option for quiet family dinners.
When you choose the perfect outdoor dining setting, you benefit from enhanced functionality, stylish design and a great way to extend the ambience of your indoor dining area outdoors. You can entertain friends in style and you can enjoy delightful evenings spent with family creating lasting memories around great food.

]]>Here, the team at Woodbury Furniture put together our favourite tips for getting the most out of your outdoor lounge.
1. Figure out a focal point
Your patio is a space for entertaining friends, making memories and unwinding after a long day. Make sure to design your focal point as the centrepiece of it all — let that be where conversations unravel. The rest of your decor will follow the warm atmosphere you’ve created.
When thinking about your focal point, consider your outdoor area’s purpose. If you want it to be an extension of your dining room, consider our outdoor settings collection. We have classic teak settings that can sit up to 14 people when fully extended, perfect for big lawns and large family gatherings.
We also have the Crosstie teak table, whose design is inspired by a railroad crosstie. Pair it with aluminium legs and seats for a contemporary look — you’ll not only get a sturdy, well-made piece of furniture, but you’ll also get a good conversation starter.
You can also consider firepits as a focal point. Our comfortable outdoor lounges are the perfect complement around your firepits, creating a cosy atmosphere in your backyard.
2. Allot enough space for a seamless flow of traffic
When designing your patio deck, consider the flow of traffic to provide a welcoming area for you and your guests. Make sure that pathways are easily accessed with no obstructions. Plan ahead by looking at potential gathering spots — will extra seating be needed, or would it benefit from an open layout? Think about how everyone can move around comfortably while enjoying their time on the patio.
A good rule of thumb is to have at least a meter of space in areas with a lot of foot traffic. If your guests tend to gather around an area that blocks exits and entrances, try placing more seats in other areas where they can lounge around more freely.
Consider our 3-seater outdoor lounges for this endeavour. We have a selection of sofas that would fit any style — from contemporary to rustic. We even have a corner sofa that you could place right against a wall and still have enough space for people to move around. Each piece of furniture from our 3-seater collection is made from high-quality materials like teak and aluminium, making them resistant to the elements and spacious enough to nap comfortably.
You can also place lounge chairs around strategic areas in your outdoor space where friends and family can gather more intimately. Our selection of lounge chairs can be purchased individually so you can mix and match styles and sizes.
3. Factor in furniture placement
Equally important to the quality of your outdoor furniture is its placement in your backyard, patio or deck. To maximise the impact of your space, place the largest furniture piece along the longest wall facing the focal point. This will add charm and draw attention in all the right places.
Furniture placement can also add to the atmosphere you’re trying to create in your outdoor lounge. Arranging furniture symmetrically creates a more formal space. But if you want to go for something more quirky or informal, arrange them asymmetrically, such as placing chairs at an angle.
If you live in an apartment with a small balcony, furniture placement can also help when setting up an outdoor lounge to maximise the space.
For example, you can place our 2-seater outdoor lounges flat against a wall or railing and pair it with a lounge chair or two. This way, you have enough space to move around and seats to entertain a few guests comfortably. Complete the look by adding an outdoor side table, such as our Juliet Teak Ottoman with Cushion. It can even double as a seat if necessary!
On the other hand, if you’re struggling to make your expansive patio feel more welcoming and comfortable, placing furniture in a U-shape or semi-circular form around your focal point is the best way to enjoy your space. Additionally, it’s best to buy matching sets of outdoor furniture so the area doesn’t feel too cluttered. Our collection of teak, wooden and aluminium sets is the perfect solution — you get stylish and well-made pieces that match perfectly with your ambience.
4. Divide your outdoor lounge into designated spaces
For a fun and safe outdoor dining experience, create some distance between your kitchen and dining area. A clear separation will make it easy to distinguish the two spaces while also keeping you secure from any open flame hazards. It would also help keep your outdoor lounge cushions clean as they’re away from food items that could stain them.
And lastly, don’t be afraid to accessorise and accentuate your outdoor lounge. Adding little touches like throw pillows, colourful area rugs or string lights, you can differentiate lounging areas from dining areas — it’s an easy way to guide guests to designated spaces subtly.
The Kai Outdoor 1 Seater Sofa in Charcoal

Combine luxurious comfort, stunning style and long-lasting durability all in one package! ]]>1. Clear off any items that are in the way
As you clean your table, ensure nothing will get damaged or marred by the cleaning process. This can be done by temporarily removing any items from the table to a safe spot.
2. Make sure the table is free of dust and debris
If there’s dirt or dust on your table, use a soft microfiber cloth and water to gently wipe the surface of your table until no remnants remain visible on its surface. This will allow the table to be cleaned efficiently and evenly.
3. Use a cleaning solution
There are a lot of specialised cleaning products for different timbers, but a safe homemade alternative can be made. You’ll want to create a mixture of liquid soap and warm water to wipe down the table. (Please note that it is best to avoid harsh chemicals and synthetics)
4. Cleaning the wood
Gently wipe your outdoor table using a microfiber cloth with your desired cleaning solution. Make sure you get into all the grooves and crevices where dirt can collect.
5. Getting rid of mildew or mould
A cleaning solution commercially made for the specific type of timber your table consists of would be advised. White Vinegar mixed with warm water is a popular non-toxic and eco-friendly alternative used to deal with any mildew or mould that's growing on timber tables. Golden Care Teak Cleaner is also a great product to be used for cleaning.
6. Use a high-pressure washer
As an alternative to the above steps, a power washer is very effective for removing any excess dirt from your table. It’s also possible but not necessary to sand the table back after using this method to achieve the best outcome. This is not advised if your table has been stained or painted, and you’re looking to maintain its current colour as it will bring back the wood to its natural appearance.
7. Apply “Hardwood & Teak Protector and Shield” once the table has dried
Once you’ve cleaned your table, you may want to apply a water-based product to maintain the aesthetics of the table. At Woodbury Furniture, we recommend Golden Care Teak Colour Protector and Golden Care Teak Shield. The protector is great for its colour maintenance capabilities, but it will change the colour of the wood away from its original colour. The shield is great to put on to seal the teak from spills and stains. These products are often used for optimal protection of a range of teak outdoor furniture.
You can read more about how these Teak and Hardwood products work by clicking on them!
You may be wondering how regularly you should clean your outdoor furniture, especially if you have an outdoor extendable dining table.
Teak requires minimal to no maintenance in order to ensure longevity of the product. However some people may like to keep it clean at all times and may clean the outdoor furniture regularly depending on how often it gets used and where it is located. If you only use your setting once a week, you may clean it every three months. If your outdoor sectional is where most of your entertaining happens, you may want to clean it more often.
With proper maintenance and care using the advised protectant and shielding products, the regular cleaning load can be lightened and you can spend more time relaxing and enjoying your furniture.
How to clean different types of outdoor tables
Different materials require different cleaning methods, so it's essential to know how to clean each type of outdoor table.
Plantation Wood
Classic teak tables can be cleaned with warm water and soap as needed. If any stains or marks don't come off at first, try using a mixture of hot water and vinegar. This should help remove the stain without damaging the wood.
Reclaimed Wood
Beautiful and rustic, Reclaimed teak tables can be cleaned the same as the plantation tables, using some warm water and soap. For heavier stains, using the same mix of hot water and vinegar will do the trick without causing any damage to your table.
Powder Coated Aluminium
The standard cleaning process of powder-coated aluminium tables involves occasional washing with mild soap and water, followed by rinsing and drying. Avoid using abrasive cleaners, bleach or solvents as this can damage the quality of the powder-coating.
The good news is that there are plenty of ways to clean your outdoor furniture and ensure it stays looking amazing all year round. Using some simple methods and inexpensive products, you can enjoy low maintenance entertaining outdoors!
So there you have it. We hope this information was useful in helping you learn how to clean an outdoor table. You don’t need any fancy tools, techniques or high-end products. Cleaning and maintaining your outdoor table is a very short and easy part of the enjoyment that comes from owning an outdoor setting.

Though tables are versatile pieces of furniture, many assume they're all the same and that it’s unimportant whether they're designed for indoors or outdoors. The truth is that there are key differences between indoor and outdoor tables, and what materials are best for longevity outdoors. We’ve composed an explanation detailing the key factors that define the purpose of an outdoor table, and what materials are best for outdoor use.
Indoor dining tables are the centrepiece of your dining room. With that being said, almost all indoor dining tables are only designed for indoor use, and should be left inside in a controlled environment.
Moisture in the air expands the wood of your indoor table when it is placed outdoors. Your furniture will be subject to cracking and warping because it has been exposed to variable temperatures and the eroding effects of the elements.
With moisture and varying temperatures, mould and mildew can begin growing when a table is not purposed against them. The inside of your home will always be at a more consistent temperature and environment for indoor tables. Issues arising from placing an indoor table outdoors can provide risks and hazards regarding the structural stability and safe-use of the table.
The materials used to make outdoor dining tables are different to those used for indoor tables, as are the designs and construction processes. Indoor tables are designed to withstand normal wear and tear, while outdoor tables are made for durability in harsh weather conditions and varying environments.
Outdoor tables provide a solid, safe and reliable place to relax and enjoy time spent outdoors, whether with close family and friends, or for larger events. These tables should be designed and constructed from the best available materials to endure through varying weather conditions and exposure to sun, rain and winds.
It’s very difficult to compare an indoor table to an outdoor table, as although their core function is a surface to be sat at, for food and beverages, they are designed for completely different environments. It is much safer to use an outdoor table inside, than an indoor table outside.
There are an abundance of timbers used in designs and production of the ever growing furniture world, but there are some important differences in what timbers are the most ideal for outdoor use.
Teak is a hardwood renown as the best timber for outdoor use. It has a naturally high oil content and high density wood grain. It naturally repels moisture and insects from damaging the timber due to the substantial natural oils in the timber.
Durability and longevity is a common concern for outdoor tables. Teak is unambiguous, being known to last decades with minimal maintenance and as one of the most durable hardwoods available. It’s versatile and can be left uncovered, exposed to the elements.
It’s also worth noting the natural beauty of teak. Lustrous golden honey-brown characteristics underline the premium quality and aesthetics of the timber. Teak, if left to natural weather, ages to a beautiful patina silvery-grey, esteemed for its unique and sophisticated allure.
You can maintain the natural honey-brown colour of teak, or reverse aged teak to its natural colour with a bit of cleaning and care using some inexpensive products.
At Woodbury Furniture, we only use the best available teak from sustainable plantations in our durable and elegant tables, giving you peace of mind and confidence that your outdoor furniture is designed for exactly that… the outdoors!
When purposing a table for outdoor use, you want to be sure you get one properly designed for your space, so you can enjoy longevity and peace of mind. When looking for outdoor dining tables, you can choose whether it's extendable, reclaimed teak, timber or aluminium to complete your outdoor setting. Woodbury Furniture also has a wide range of indoor tables with varying styles, sizes, finishes and colours that you can choose from.

You may be specifically looking for an aluminium chair to complete a particularly modern look or a bench seat to create the perfect picnic feel for your outdoor area. Teak and wicker outdoor chairs tend to work very well in a range of outdoor settings.
Material
The materials used in the outdoor chair of your choice will affect the level of comfort that you experience in years to come. While outdoor lounge chairs are great for the ultimate relaxed comfort, you may be looking at outdoor dining rather than lounging and an outdoor wicker, teak or aluminium dining chair might be the more suitable and still comfortable option.

]]>Follow this handy guide for a complete list of instructions on how to clean outdoor chairs to ensure they remain neat and tidy in the years ahead.
Most outdoor chairs only require cleaning once every season, but if desired they can be wiped down regularly to prevent any dirt build-up. If you use the proper cleaning products on your outdoor chairs, there’s no risk that regular cleaning will cause any damage to your furniture.
The Teak Blaxland Arm Chair
Wood is one of the most common materials used for outdoor furniture. Whilst wooden outdoor chairs, particularly those made of teak, are resistant to the Australian climate, they can be given a regular clean if desired which will remove any build-up of dirt or other unwanted grime.
Cleaning outdoor chairs made from wood is as simple as washing them down with a solution of soapy water and using a soft cloth to avoid damaging the wood. For more stubborn build-ups of dirt or grime, a touch of bleach can be used in the solution. An alternative to bleach is to use white vinegar which is a great way to remove more stubborn stains. For particularly stubborn marks, Golden Care have a fantastic product called Teak Cleaner which produces great results.
Once the cleaning is complete, the solution can be hosed off with water at a normal pressure leaving your wooden chairs revived and ready to enjoy.
The Mackay Outdoor Dining Chair in Charcoal
Aluminium outdoor chairs only require occasional cleaning as the surface works to help avoid the build-up of dirt.
To clean your aluminium chairs, simply spray on a mild cleaning agent, wipe down with a soft cloth or soft-bristled brush and rinse the chair with water. It is important to avoid using harsh cleaning agents such as bleach when cleaning aluminium outdoor chairs as they can harm the finish of your outdoor furniture.
After you have finished washing your outdoor dining chairs, they can be left in partial sun to dry before being packed away or placed back into your outdoor seating arrangement.
Vinegard Dining Table and Kubu Outdoor Dining Chair in Banana
Wicker is a great material for keeping your outdoor chairs clean and looking great. The sustainable material used in our wicker chairs is resistant to the build-up of moisture and dirt, so you don’t need to spend a lot of time cleaning your chairs.
Warm soapy water is all you will typically need to clean outdoor chairs made of wicker. Use a soft cloth or a sponge to wipe away any dirt that has collected on the surface of your chair and the furniture can then be rinsed with a normal hose.
Although unlikely, if the wicker chairs have developed some kind of stain or a build of foreign matter, a white vinegar solution, two tablespoons mixed with a cup of water, is a great natural way to help remove unwanted spots without damaging the wicker. Wicker chairs are very quick to air dry and the cushions can then be put back on the seats, leaving your chairs ready for their next use.
The Kai Dining Chair in Charcoal
Outdoor lounge chairs are possibly the most comfortable outdoor furniture you can own. They are low maintenance and don't really require cleaning unless it is desired to keep them in pristine condition. In all our outdoor lounge chair styles, the cushion covers will be removable and can easily be machine-washed and sun-dried. You can dry an outdoor lounge chair in a neutral environment or under direct sunlight.
For chairs without removable covers, you can create a soapy solution of ¼ cup of dishwashing liquid combined with 1 cup of water that can be sprayed onto areas that require cleaning.
Before scrubbing, it is best to leave the sprayed fabric in direct sunlight for 15-20 minutes to allow the solution to soak in before scrubbing the affected areas with a soft bristle brush. You can also use vinegar to spot clean unwanted marks and stains on our outdoor lounge chairs. Golden Care Fabric Cleaner and Fabric Protector are also helpful products.
The Reclaimed Teak Monte Carlo Sun Lounger with Charcoal Cushion
As sun lounges remain outside in the weather more often than any other outdoor furniture, they may be exposed to more dirt. Sun, rain and wind can all affect the cleanliness of your sun lounges. Like other quality outdoor furniture they require minimal to no maintenance. Some people are keen to keep them looking clean and tidy so they may wish to undergo cleaning from time to time.
Most sun lounges are made of either wood or aluminium. To ensure that your sun lounges are properly cleaned, you should follow the instructions above for how to clean metal outdoor chairs or wooden chairs for the best results. If your sun lounge has fabric cushions, the instructions for how to clean outdoor fabric chairs above will also help complete the cleaning process.
If you have questions about cleaning outdoor chairs, the team at Woodbury Furniture are always ready to help. You can contact us anytime for expert advice on cleaning your outdoor chairs for the best possible results.

If you have been keeping up with our blogs, you would know that at Woodbury, we are a passionate believer in teak as the best material for outdoor furniture. Whether it’s a lounge suite, dining setting, or even a bench seat, teak has proven to be a superior material for any exterior – rain, hail, or shine.
The main benefit of teak is the fact that it requires little to no maintenance. Many customers are prepared to oil and regularly sand back their furniture, but this is simply not necessary with “A Grade” teak, and that is because it is so high in its own natural oils. In a way, teak self-maintains and looks great.
If your teak is kept undercover and is not exposed to a large amount of direct sun, it will keep its original colour. However, if the wood is totally outside and receives a large amount of direct sun, it will weather to a beautiful silver grey hue. With high levels of regular exposure to the sun, the natural oils found within the teak wood will rise to the surface and oxidise over time, eventually resulting in this beautiful silver-grey colour.
With higher levels of sun exposure, the timeframe in which greying can occur, varies depending on how much sun the timber is getting. In some cases, the silver-grey process takes more than a year to occur. In other instances, with 100% full sun it could begin after a few months.
Unlike other woods, when teak weathers, it gets a silver-grey colour that is quite beautiful and is highly desired by many people. Others may prefer the original honey brown natural timber colour. The greying is reversible of course, so in the end it's up to you.
Some people love the silver grey look. But what if your teak is totally outside, goes silver grey and then you decide you don't love it? Don't worry, there is a simple and fast way to get the look you love back. This can be done very quickly with a high pressure hose. The hosing will strip away the oxidisation and will restore the furniture to the original honey brown colour. Depending on how quickly the greying is occurring, you may like to do this once a year.
Another way to reverse the greying is to sand back the teak. Of course, this can be a more time-consuming job and can also be difficult in dining chairs that may have little grooves and slats that could be difficult to get inside. Many customers find this process therapeutic and enjoy spending time outdoors on a job like this, so it is a matter of personal preference and how much time you are wanting to put into it.
Finally, the silver-grey can be reversed by utilising a Teak Cleaner which you may be able to source from a hardware store and that we also stock at Woodbury. Our preferred brand for this is called ‘Golden Care’ and they stock a range of teak products which we recommend and trust.
The Teak Cleaner process is quite easy. You simply wet the timber and apply the product with a sponge, you allow it to soak into the furniture for 3 minutes and then work the teak with a scrubbing pad in the direction of the grain and finish with another rinse.
Whilst it is not needed with teak wood as teak has its own natural oil, some people still like to apply an oil to their teak furniture. In this instance, we would advise the use of Golden Care Teak Protector. Again, this could be sourced at a hardware store or from Woodbury. It’s a product that we know and trust.
By applying this over-the-top layer of the teak, it will make sure you get to keep that original look you fell in love with. It can appear a bit dark when you first apply it, so we do like to recommend to customers that they test the oil somewhere discreetly perhaps under the table first to make sure they are happy with the finish before they go ahead and oil the entire item.
If your item is in full sun you may need to reapply this every 6 to 12 months. If it is undercover it could be every 2 to 3 years. It should be noticeable to tell when the time is right to reapply. Application is very easy and can be done with a microfibre cloth or a brand-new dish sponge.
Furniture is meant to be enjoyed and accidents are bound to happen – it is almost inevitable that someone will at some point spill something on your beautiful furniture that could be difficult to remove. ‘Golden Care’ has a product which is called Teak Shield, it works as an invisible shield that you can apply to your furniture which forms a barrier. Once applied, stains like sauce, coffee, wine, and oil cannot penetrate through to the timber. Even stubborn spills can then be wiped off!
The Teak Bakke Outdoor Stacking Dining Arm Chair
There is no doubt about the fact that our teak outdoor furniture is built to last. It is immensely stable due to the natural oils found within it which makes it immune to rotting. Teak has proven its durability by remaining a popular choice in boats and buildings even now, after being used for many centuries. You will not regret furnishing your outdoor space with “A Grade” Teak.
With the tips we mentioned, and choosing the right lounge setting, dining setting or bench seat from Woodbury, you will be able to keep your teak looking amazing according to your style and taste.
If you have any questions relating to the care and maintenance of teak, please feel free to give us a call on 1300 887 289.

It can be difficult to justify spending a lot of money on outdoor dining furniture as opposed to opting for the cheaper style alternatives.
There are a lot of affordable options for ‘outdoor dining sets’ on the market, many of them are not recommended as proper outdoor dining furniture. That seems crazy, doesn’t it? A lot of affordable furniture does not have the gaps in the table tops which is necessary for the water to drain and a lot of these tables and chairs cannot cope with the harsh Australian Sun or the rain, eventually perishing.
For these reasons, it might be time to consider a long-term investment in teak furnishings which are proven time and time again, to be the best outdoor dining sets - particularly when you do not have the ability to keep the table and chairs covered underneath a pergola, protected from the sun, wind, and rain.
Miami Dining Table Reclaimed Teak and Rockdale Arm Chair
Oftentimes with outdoor dining furniture, it is more important to get the chair right, than the table. The outdoor dining set should be placed in an area where you want to spend time. Obviously, this means being comfortable in the chair. If you get the opportunity, it is great to be able to visit some showrooms and really get a feel for what style of chair you know to be comfortable. An outdoor furniture set could have chairs with high backs, low backs, angled backs, upright backs, arms, or even no arms at all.
At Woodbury we sell the same Teak Chairs in both an ‘Armed’ and ‘Side Chair’ varieties. Examples of these are our Bakke, Hawkesbury, and Blaxland ranges.
Blaxland is probably our best-selling chair range. It is a popular design and is great for customers who love the high, straight back and find it incredibly supportive. For tighter spaces, you may consider a mixture of side and armchairs because the arms do take up more room. Often the armchair is a bit easier to relax in and people enjoy having their elbows resting to the side. But ultimately if it is being used as part of an outdoor dining set, your arms will be on the table for eating anyway.
Hawkesbury is another popular choice and has the advantage of being able to fold down flat, even with the armchair. This is a great idea, particularly when opting for an extension table where the table may not need to be extended to full size for everyday use.
The Hawkesbury Outdoor Setting in Plantation Teak
There are three things to consider when it comes to your table.
1. How big can you go?
2. How many do you want to seat?
3. What aesthetic are you going for?
It’s not always possible to have a table as big as one might desire. There might be a certain space in which the table needs to fit, and there needs to be room to comfortably get in and out of the chairs. Ideally, one should allow 80-100cm on each side of the table, to allow for easy access. Many outdoor dining furniture style tables will be either 100cm in depth or 120cm. So, that means the space might need to be 300cm deep for optimum comfort. Length is usually not as big of an issue and there are heaps of different lengths available. One of our best-selling extension sizes is the 180cm-240cm in both our Kai One hand Extension table and our Rectangle Extension Table. This size range is usually a generous 6-8 seat size depending of course on the type of chair you pair it with.
For longer alfresco or outdoor spaces, many opt for a 300cm table where they know they can seat up to 14 people. Sometimes, our customers like to do a combination of lounging and entertaining with their outdoor dining furniture. Look towards our Kai Living and Kai Outdoor Dining furniture ranges for an example of this or even our Vinegard and Monte Carlo ranges. For something more classic, any of our plantation teak tables or the Juliet Lounge Setting will look fantastic together too.
Ultimately, its best to decide about the kind of look first. There is a mentality that “timber is timber” but that tends to change when people see teak or reclaimed teak in real life. They are very beautiful timbers and do look very different to other timbers. Our Vinegard tables are popular due to their rustic aesthetic, some prefer the contemporary look of an aluminium and timber combination found in our Kai and Miami ranges and many can’t go past the classic look and feel of a plantation teak look. It is of course up to each person and whether they have a certain style already evident in the exterior that needs to be kept consistent with the right outdoor dining set.
The Monte Carlo Reclaimed Teak Outdoor Lounge Setting
Above all, this next outdoor dining set purchase should be done with the idea that the pieces will last for many years to come. There’s no point in choosing something for the backyard, only to find that it needs replacing in a year or two because it has perished.
We really do urge our customers to engage in research where they will see that teak is the best material for outdoor dining furniture so they have the peace of mind spending a little more money now and benefiting in the long run.
Outdoor dining furniture suppliers are competitive, and there are plenty of savings to be had all throughout the year, especially now coming into Summer. Our advice would be to acknowledge that "you get what you pay for" and lesser outdoor dining furniture options are not always the best ones to choose.
While a run-of-the-mill, cheap outdoor dining set is tempting, consider how many times you might spend that money over and over to replace it when it has perished.

]]>Our customers want low maintenance outdoor dining furniture as well as the reassurance that whatever they leave outside can be exposed to all weather conditions with minimal damage.
There are two types of wicker furnishings available on the market- cane and synthetic. Cane is a natural product and will not be a viable long-term option if left outside in the Australian weather. Cane furniture is vulnerable when it comes to moisture changes in the air and will eventually become brittle in the dry weather.
The other option, synthetic wicker is the wiser choice for outdoor dining furniture. It does not face the same issue of durability as cane. At Woodbury, we are thrilled to be able to provide our customers with the reassurance that both our Hamptons and Kubu Synthetic Wicker Chair types can be left out and are going to be okay in rain, hail, or shine!
We have two types of synthetic wicker in our range of outdoor dining furniture offerings - The Kubu Outdoor Dining Collection features a fantastic chair range - covering the Kubu Tub Chair, the Kubu Bates Armchair and Kubu Bates Side Chair and the second range being the Hamptons Alfresco Chairs.
Within our Kubu Range, we offer a tub chair in 4 colours: Banana, Natural, Cappuccino and White, as well as the Kubu Bates Armchair in Cappuccino and the Kubu Bates Side Chair in Cappuccino- however the Kubu Bates Chairs can certainly be customised to the available colours by order. The Kubu range has a lot of qualities that make them the superior choice for outdoor dining furniture.
The Kubu Outdoor Dining Chair in White
The Kubu collection is made with a product called Viro Fibre. This is made in the USA by a company called Viro. Viro Fibre is a true colour- meaning that each of the woven rods are the same colour the whole way through. The benefit of this is that the Kubu chairs will never fade, as it is the exact same colour underneath. Additionally, it does not visibly scratch as you cannot scratch away a true colour. We consider the Kubu Chairs the “Rolls Royce” option, and they come with the peace of mind of a 5-year warranty that applies to splitting and fading as well as the structural frame.
Due to the popularity of the Kubu Chairs, we launched a more affordable version known as the Hamptons Chair which is available in two colours: Rattan Grey and White. The material that the chairs are made from is called U-VAX. This is a synthetic wicker that is weather resistant, and the base is made with aluminium, rendering it perfect for your outdoor dining set. The chair pad is made from polyester (and is not weather resistant) so we would recommend bringing the pad in when not in use to ensure longevity.
U Vax is colourfast, waterproof, UV resistant and weatherproof. It can stand out in all weather, making it perfect for outdoor dining furniture. The material is a combination of High-Density Polyethylene and Low-Density Polyethylene and UV resistant chemicals.
The Hamptons Chairs are a great option for outdoor dining furniture. Though we recommend bringing the pad inside, it can certainly withstand the elements and see you through many years enjoying your outdoor space. It is comfortable, durable, lightweight, and attractive. The most popular colour is the rattan grey due to its “natural” colouring that allows it to complement almost any timber table.
We’ve increased production to meet the incredible demand. Many customers order 8-12 at a time on average, but it is also a popular option to use two beside a small side table for a coffee and newspaper nook on an en suite balcony or similar.
The Hamptons Outdoor Dining Chairs in Rattan Grey with our Reclaimed Teak Vinegard Outdoor Dining Table
While the Kubu range does come with a higher price tag, in a lot of cases customers find the investment a no-brainer. They have got the peace of mind that it will face no issues being exposed to the elements, it is the kind of quality in any outdoor furniture set that will see it last for many, many more years to come.
Whether fully exposed or undercover, you will not be disappointed with either type of synthetic wicker stocked at Woodbury. We are happy to discuss with you what is the better option and make recommendations for your outdoor dining furniture, so please feel free to give us a call or pop into one of our Sydney Showrooms.
]]>Apartment and unit living is steadily increasing around the country, especially in Sydney. Here, we have a large population and blocks of units are being developed in many suburbs. First home buyers often start in units for their affordability and spatial attributes. Also there are many baby boomers who are shifting their living situation to apartments and units as they make the decision to downsize.
With this compartmentalised living, there is a growing demand for outdoor furniture that is suitable for a smaller space. Yet this furniture needs to remain both functional and stylish. Apartment and unit living can impose restrictions when it comes to what can fit, where it can fit it and how many can be seated – a new problem that wasn’t so apparent with larger homes.
However, this does not mean resorting to low quality outdoor furniture. As we will see, you really can "have your cake and eat it too"!
There are some incredible views in many of these new development locations. There is such stunning scenery in Australia - particularly the harbour and city skylines. But there are also beautiful bays, rivers, beaches and stunning bushland that are peppered across the country.
There is no need to compromise when it comes to outdoor furniture in Sydney. We have a few tips and tricks for maximising a small space to maintain your beautiful scenic view. There is nothing like lounging on great outdoor furniture, sipping on a cuppa or a glass of vino and enjoying the amazing view. It is great news that this is certainly not out of reach.
There are quite a few collections of outdoor furniture within the Woodbury range that are designed for tight spaces. A good starting place is to work out your depth and capacity as this is often the biggest restriction.
You may have already started searching for furniture on line or in retail stores and have found that a lot of table options are either 100cm or 120cm wide. When you take into consideration another 100cm on each side to allow for chairs, that means you need around 300cm available in depth and this is often not possible.
This is where Woodbury outdoor furniture may be able to help.
We have 85cm wide tables in both our Classic Plantation Teak Extension Range, as well as our Reclaimed Teak Miami Collection.
For particularly narrow balconies, it may be that the the amount of space saved using a slim width table is still not enough. In this case, the space can be amplified further by pairing the table with bench seats on one or both sides of the table. Woodbury has bench seats available in a few different sizes, some will allow for storing the whole way under the table, while others will recess a little once they meet the leg of the table.
Regardless of which one is chosen; it can save over 150cm in space. With outdoor furniture and apartment living – every centimetre is precious.
The Linden Teak Bench Setting
We’ve come across customers who have spectacular views and do not necessarily need excessive outdoor furniture to comfortably seat many people. For them, we like to suggest the idea of pushing the table right up against the balcony wall and have seating on one side only, as well as possibly having seats on the ends of the table. While this eliminates 3 or 4 potential seats, doing so allows them to appreciate the views without the obstruction of guests dining on the other side of the table. It also optimises the space. Again, they have potentially saved over 150cm in depth with a small adjustment to their outdoor furniture setup.
Another idea based on this concept, is a console table. We have a console table in our Vinegard collection of outdoor furniture which is available in two sizes- 180cm and 240cm. It’s only 40cm deep and is perfect to pop snacks and beverages on whilst soaking in the gorgeous scenery on offer.
While traditionally console tables aren’t designed to be seated at, we find this to be a great solution that we can offer our customers.
None of these options will work for me, what now?
While we have presented a few options, there are always going to be spaces that will not work with what we have put forward. For customers who are still keen to use plantation or reclaimed teak, which is always the recommended and best material to use for outdoor furniture – we pride ourselves on being able to offer customisation and top-tier service for our Woodbury customers.
Give us a call, send us an email, or pop in to one of our two Sydney showrooms to discuss what outdoor furniture you are seeking. You can present us with a concept, a picture for inspiration or some dimensions of what you are hoping to achieve. We will liaise with our designers and production team who are likely to be able to solve your need.
There are no obligations or consultation fees for this and no custom designed outdoor furniture will be put into production until it is fully approved by the customer.
]]>How's it going to look?
And how long is it going to last?
When buying timber furniture for outdoors, we can be overwhelmed with options. Therefore, it helps to understand the major players and understand why teak is considered as the superior option for outdoor furniture.
There are other timbers on the market, but there is something uniquely special about Teak for Outdoor Furniture.
Teak has a high oil content
Teak is immensely stable because it has a high oil content. This is a natural repellent that makes it virtually immune to termites and rotting.
Indonesian teakwood was a favourite among shipbuilders for many centuries due to its reliable durability. It’s a tight-grained hardwood and can handle the the constant salt, wind and water, and the often-damaging harsh sun.
Teak looking great: new, and old
New teak wood has a beautiful warm colour and other woods simply don’t look as beautiful when they’re brand new. Also, other woods tend not to look as great after they have been exposed to the elements. They quickly deteriorate and don’t weather to a nice colour.
Teak, on the other hand, matures with age, like a good wine. If it is kept under cover, it will remain close to its original colour and look. If it gets a lot of direct sun, it weathers to a nice colour and has a very distinctive teak look.
The Blaxland Collection featuring the Oval Extension 180-240cm table. The Chairs are available both with and without arms which also helps if you are space conscious.
Different grades of teak
Teak comes in different grades. At Woodbury Furniture, our grade is the A-grade teak. You can tell that because it has a super-fine sanded finish, meaning it is not stained and the wood is visible. Those who use a lower grade of teak will often sell it already with a stain on it and the wood colour can't be seen. C Grade teak doesn't have the same warm colour, it tends to look more grey and less consistent. The wood is taken from the outer rings of the tree where the grain is not as tight.
With the use of high-quality wood, our teak wooden outdoor furniture ticks the boxes for ascetic appeal and durability.
So if teak is the way forward, how does one figure out which outdoor furniture to buy?
There are a few options to choose from with teak outdoor dining tables. There are fixed tables that do not extend, or - if you need to maximise the space - it is worthwhile considering the versatility of extending tables. There are plenty of options for both extending and non-extending teak tables within the Woodbury collection.
Our extending tables are made from plantation teak. Many people love the extending tables because they often have limited space in their outdoor area and don't want to take up all that valuable space all the time. They can then simply extend the table only when its needed for a larger gathering. The one thing people want in an outdoor area is the feeling of freedom and space to move and that's where this level of flexibility is appreciated.
The Classic Round Plantation Teak Extension Table. Ideal for hosting visitors while not overwhelming a tight space on a day-to-day basis
We offer extending tables at a very affordable price point. The round extending table is great if you’ve got a smaller outdoor space, but still want the flexibility to seat a few extra people for those special occasions. It also provides great flexibility as a nice, comfortable 4-seater table that can extend to fit 6 or even 8 seats, depending on the size of the chair.
Our fixed tables are made from the popular reclaimed teak. This is a beautiful timber which has a unique look about it...and a history behind it. The wood is taken from old structures that are no longer being used and the wood’s been repurposed into a beautiful piece of furniture.
Knowing that your new furniture is reclaimed and has a rich backstory behind it adds so many layers of fascination and mystery.
Reclaimed teak is also a very stable timber, with all the qualities of teak. It may be 100 years old, and you know it’s stood the test of time, and will last many more years.
The designs of these tables are also very attractive and popular. They have a solid look about them. The leg design allows for chairs to go underneath, so the legs aren’t reducing the usable space at the table. Popular designs of reclaimed teak tables are the Miami and the Vinegard.
Not only does Reclaimed Teak have a beautiful rustic feel to it, but there is so much historical significance behind each and every mark to be appreciated.
The Kai table uses mixed materials - metal and wood - and that creates a nice, modern look that works in a lot of outdoor spaces. This look has become more and more popular over the last couple of years.
The one-handed mechanism to open and close the table is a lot of fun because it’s so easy to use. It always shocks people when they see this beautiful mechanism in action for the first time.
It’s also lighter weight, and so it’s easier to move around, if that’s important to you.

The home is where we spend most of our time, so it’s important to make it a place where we can enjoy ourselves and feel relaxed.
We are spending much more time at home these days, with travel restrictions and many of us working from home more often. Many are finding a greater appreciation for relaxing and entertaining at home with family and friends.
Many are trying to give their home more of a resort style feel. Why not? If we can't travel as much, why not improve our home so the time we spend there, feels more like a holiday? Teak outdoor furniture is very widely used in resorts and a collection of matching teak settings and other teak pieces in the outdoor areas, really does have that effect of making the home feel like a resort.
It's often a case of travel budgets being redirected and purchasing nice furniture for the home has a long lasting value. It’s something we can reap the reward of for a very long time, year after year.
It’s a form of home improvement.
The home isn’t just a place to eat and sleep between lots of other activities. More and more, it’s the place of relaxing, entertaining and winding down.
Woodbury Furniture is Sydney’s home of teak outdoor furniture.

]]>In our previous interview, Chris Catarino shared his thoughts and explanations on the art of Property Styling.
In part two, Chris shares his expertise around interior design:
Chris: The most important elements for making a house feel like a ‘home’ are the little things, the details. It's easy to buy large furniture pieces and throw them in a space – the detail of how you position those pieces within the space, for function and flow is what really matters.
If you have small children, you should look for durable furniture that can take a beating and hide the daily use effectively. If you're looking for more formal show-piece spaces, you might splurge on something that really makes a statement. I personally love spending more on key pieces that really make a statement and surrounding them with more budget friendly options.
The second step in making your space feel like a home are the specific choices of soft furnishings. This can include cushions, rugs, and throws – mixed with decorative elements such as specific accessories, greenery, and artworks. The right combination can tie the scheme together.
Your home should reflect your personality and showcase the things that mean something to you. You should feel encouraged to mix in unique elements and pieces that represent you, this is what makes you, you! They can also become great conversation starters for those you invite into your space.
Chris: I find a lot of DIYers struggle with two things, scale and balance. When it comes to the details of creating a beautiful and functioning space, scale and balance are extremely important.
If the room is small and you put an oversized lounge in it but can't fit anything else, it will be impossible for that to ever feel right. Likewise, if you have a large bed or headboard and tiny bedside lamps, or no lamps at all, then the balance of the space will feel off.
Some key pointers to scale correctly is to think about how things flow from one piece to the next. We use the rule of triangles and groups of three in descending order to make a well-balanced and scaled scheme that looks and feels smooth.
Chris: Before coming up with a design, think about who will occupy the space, and how it will be used. Consider the layout and how the spaces will naturally flow from room to room.
Creating a focal point for each room is a great way to help you plan around what you’ll require for that space and will inform how you will decorate it.
For a formal living room, you might use your focal point as a conversational area around a fireplace. In a family room you could incorporate a large corner lounge focused on a media centre for movie nights and relaxation. A study or library space might have a beautiful statement desk as its focal, with bookcases equally mixed with books surrounding it with themed decor and a set of reading chairs.
Remember scale and balance, and the finer details to complete a look that is uniquely you and makes you want to spend time in your own space.
And don’t forget your outdoor spaces. The Aussie backyard has been a staple in our family culture growing up and these days there is less and less separation between the indoors and outdoors. So it makes sense to invest in durable and well-designed outdoor lounge and dining furniture settings to make the most of those well used spaces and make spending hours in the great outdoors enjoyable for all. Some of the best products for outdoor areas are teak (for that natural look with the advantage of its high natural oil content for weather resistance), aluminium (for its contemporary look and easy to clean durability), and synthetic UV protected wicker (great for that relaxed look and durability).
The space you create should have details that make it uniquely you, and that make you want to spend time within that space.
Chris: Honestly, it was a bit of a fluke. I originally graduated from university with a degree in architecture and was interviewing at architectural firms after graduating. I landed a position at an International Architectural and Interiors firm, which primarily focused on hospitality interior design projects like hotels, casinos, and restaurants around the world.
I was hired for a design coordinator role, primarily working on drawings, plans and admin related aspects of various projects. After a few months in the role, I was given more design-related tasks on projects.
One day I turned up to a team meeting on a new project and my name was listed as the Junior Interior Designer of this project. It's all history from there!
I believe that great design should be a reflection of your story, taking all aspects of daily life and finding a way to marry function with beautiful and elegant design that is uniquely representing you.
Chris spoke about property styling in part one of this series.
]]>When you’re preparing to put your home on the market, you’ve probably thought about getting a designer in to show your home in its best possible light.
We asked Chris Catarino to share some of his secrets around interior design and property styling.

Decorating the indoor space with a transition to the outdoor area featuring teak outdoor furniture
This is the first part of a two part series. Part one will cover property styling and in part two, Chris will dive deeper into the principles of interior design.
Chris: Property styling (also known as home staging) is actually quite different to interior design, even though it uses most of the same design principles. Property styling is a service that helps home owners, developers and real estate professionals best present a property for maximum buyer appeal to get the absolute best sales price.
The goal here is to appeal to the masses or target a buyer demographic and not the current home owner. Whereas interior design is all about the current home owner or occupier of the space and what will make them enjoy and use the space to its best potential.
The best analogy to distinguish the difference is when selling a home, a property stylist is aiming to take your home and turn it into a product for others, to enable them to imagine themselves there and for them to fall in love with it. Interior design takes a house and makes it feel like home to you by appealing to your tastes and personality.
Chris: We have been part of a lot of amazing projects over the years. One project that stands out was a small cottage that was listed for sale the week COVID lockdowns were starting. We were able to push the installation forward and complete the project quickly so that the agent could get buyers in before the looming lockdown. The house sold within one week for 50k above what was expected before COVID struck.
The skill of an interior designer can be a huge help when preparing a property for sale
Chris: Neutral colours are critical when selling your home. Strong colours may make you enjoy your own space, but they can be polarising to buyers that may not have the same taste or style as you do. By using neutral colours on walls and adding in pops of colour through accessories, cushions and artwork, you allow the buyer to easily move through the space without having glaring distractions that detract from their ability to see all the space has to offer.
Chris: It's the age-old balance of life. We get so busy focused on the day to day, we find time slips by and we never get to making our homes the best they can be. We also are creatures of habit and we get used to the way things are, or always have been. The most common comments I hear from homeowners are “it has always been set up that way” and “I never thought to change that around the way you have.”
So, when it comes to selling, most have finally decided to let go of what they are used to for the exchange of getting the most out of their investment. They then realise that in order to do so they need to make those improvements they have always wanted to do in order to attract the greatest number of buyers at the best sales price.
Indoor space with the rustic look using a reclaimed teak dining table
Chris: It's more common than you think. Often my experience with sellers is they never reached a decisive time to bring in a stylist. Taking it back a few years to when they first acquired this property, they were flat out just moving in. They were making a big investment already and were focused on getting all their tasks prioritised with a new home.
That usually means taking years' worth of stuff they have already accumulated with them and just making it work in the new space for the time being. Then life takes over and the 'would be nice' improvements end up on a dream list instead of planned out and executed.
Chris: Yes. When it comes time to sell, having a stylist come in with a fresh set of eyes to organise furniture, artwork, and colours to enhance the space. Or even to review and re-arrange how existing items could best be used—all of a sudden, the home takes on a new life of its own that the owners never imagined.
Of course, the homeowner falls in love with the property again and wishes they had done it sooner. We once styled a property where we used the majority of the owner's large furnishings and we simply brought in the bits and pieces such as rugs, artwork and small pieces of furniture. The home was set to market with a 4-week auction campaign.
The day before the auction, the homeowners called us and said they’d cancelled the auction and decided to stay. They told me, “we just love the house too much to leave now. Would you sell us everything you brought in so we can keep it how you've arranged it?”
We've also had the scenario where the buyers fall in love with the place so much that they want to buy the house as-is, with all the furniture we've brought in.

There’s something wonderful about watching the sunrise over the beach.
Ever since Par Arnoldson arrived in Australia from Sweden, he has kept up his passion for Australian beaches. He’s taken some breathtaking pictures and written about his experiences, because he wants to encourage Australians to enjoy the gifts they have right on their doorstep.
Photographed by Par Arnoldson.
“So many people have never seen a sunrise, let alone a sunrise at the beach”, he remarked, with a touch of surprise. “It’s a magical moment. If you pick a day when the weather forecast predicts a bit of clouds, the sun will paint the sky in amazing colours”.
He loves getting up early to watch the sunrise on one of Sydney’s northern beaches.
It’s a quiet time, where people tend to stay alone and soak in the atmosphere before they’ve had their first coffee.
But sunrise over the beach on Australia’s east coast isn’t the only charm for the Woodbury Furniture veteran team member. He once drove from Sydney to Perth to watch a sunset over the beach.
“It was surreal, the landscape as you drive across the Nullarbor Plain. “Even reading the road signs is exotic. You see so many camels, and more kangaroos than you could imagine.”
As he crossed the Red Centre, he installed a special “kangaroo whistle” to keep the kangaroos away from coming towards the car.
For someone who has moved from Sweden, a country with its own charm , the Australian landscape has its own rugged beauty.
What amazes him is how few of the locals get to taste it. “If you live in Sydney, you don’t need to cross the world to visit truly spectacular beaches. Many Swedes would travel once or twice a year on a 14-hour flight to get to beaches that are just an hour’s drive from parts of Sydney.”
If some of the beaches are a rocky bushwalk to get to, the locals are friendly.
“It’s opened our eyes to see mateship. Even when we go to isolated places, we’ve had some very friendly greetings.”
After a half-hour bushwalk down to the secluded Iron Ladder beach at Central Coast, the relentless explorer met some locals who had got to the beach by boat. Before long, he was a guest on the boat, and being shown around some of the local islands before being dropped off on Putty Beach.
Meeting strangers when you’re off the beaten track seems to form a natural bond. They had great conversations about life in general, and after the beach adventurer had been dropped off at another beach, he struck up a conversation with someone doing the gardening.
“They treat you as a friend”, and before long, he was given a lift back to his car.
Many of the remote beaches have to be accessed by a fire trail.
I asked Par how many beaches there were in Australia. “17,463”, he shoots back, without having to think about it. But, he says, that’s disputed. After all, where does one beach end and another begin?
“I like to think of Australia as one big beach”, he says with a cheeky smile.
Not that he’s a big swimmer. His passion is more about photography, and exploring new places. Now that he and his wife have two little children, “you get to see all the adventure again through their eyes.”
“You know that excitement that kids have over small things?” It looks like the grown-up Par hasn’t lost his own childlike sense of wonder.
What could be more Australian than a barbie? “Thank you, Australia, for providing electric barbecues at so many beaches!”
Par likes to leave the place he visited better than he found it. To help with this, he takes with him some aluminium foil to keep the barbecue clean for the next person.
When you go camping near the beach on the east coast of Australia, the sunrise works as your alarm clock. But if you’re up before dawn, you can find your way in the dark as the sun paints the sky in amazing colours.
One of Par’s favourite trips is to Bermagui. It’s on the Sapphire Coast on the south coast of NSW. Two of the most spectacular sights are Camel Rock and Horse Head Rock . When you approach the Horse Head Rock it doesn’t look at all like the head of a horse, until you walk past him, then you see this beauty unfold before your eyes.
And depending on the tide, it can be an easy or a tough trek. (Check local conditions before you try this).
But the amazing beaches aren’t restricted to regional areas in NSW. Ever heard of Resolute Beach? It’s in Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park to the north of Sydney, as is—according to the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service—one of the Seven Best Sydney Beaches You’ve Never Heard Of.
“One of my favourite beaches in Australia is Hyam’s Beach in Jervis Bay in NSW.” It has the boast of being “the whitest beach on the planet.” Less well known is nearby Murray’s Beach. It’s more secluded, and not so crowded, with its pristine clear waters and pearly white sand.
A favourite family beach is Caves Beach near Swansea, to the north of Sydney. As the name suggests, Caves Beach has a network of sea caves which can be explored at low tide. (Incidentally, near Caves Beach you’ll find another Murray’s Beach.)
You can sit in the shade on Caves Beach in the summer, sheltering yourself from the hot sun. There are also lots of tunnels for the children to crawl through.
In the Newcastle area, you can visit Stockton Beach . It’s been the site of many shipwrecks and aircraft crashes over the years. In 1974, the 53,000 tonne Norwegian bulk carrier, MV Sygna ran aground during a major storm, and it became a landmark for the local area.
If you’re looking for somewhere closer to Sydney, there’s Burning Palms Beach at the south end of the Royal National Park. You can visit Wattamolla Beach. Wattamolla is the local Aboriginal name of the area, meaning "place near running water".
If you’re up to a walk that is challenging, but with stunning views, have a look at the Palm Jungle loop track . (Make sure you follow the safety advice on the NSW National Parks and Wildlife website , especially as the track is affected by closures).
You can head towards the Figure Eight Pools but be wary! It’s located on a dangerous rock shelf, and we don’t want to lose any of our Woodbury Furniture customers.
Have you been to any secluded beaches? What’s your favourite?
1. Plan the day with a simple run-sheet, maybe some picnic food and a blanket.
2. Bring enough water. (If it’s a 40 minute walk down to the beach, it’s likely to be an hour heading back due to the elevation difference)
3. Bring enough sun protection (sunscreen, hat etc.)
4. When bringing small kids don’t forget the BabyBjorn or similar carrying system.
5. If you are doing the most extreme walks, let someone know where you’re going.
6. Scan the coast on satellite imagery in Google Earth to find new beaches.
7. Don’t push your family too hard with exhausting bush walks until everyone is fit enough to do the harder rated walks.
]]>This contemporary lounge setting is sure to impress your guests. From its sleek but solid proportions to generous seating space, this range is flexible and adaptable in any space and can be configured in multiple ways.
This year, when we’ve got a lot of good reasons to be outdoors, this is great furniture for an Aussie summer.
And the Monte Carlo looks amazing! Whether you’re sitting in it, or you’re just looking at it, it really makes an impact. It’s very comfortable, with its big, thick cushions. The Reclaimed teak and the thick, weather-resistant cushions also mean there is minimal maintenance required.
The Monte Carlo gives you the feeling of having lots of space. You don’t feel cramped.
This means when you have people over, it just feels very social. When you’re with friends, it’s a bit like sitting around in a lounge room, except you’re outside.
But it also works if you want to laze around by yourself reading a book or checking your mobile.
It’s virtually indestructible! (I’ve got teenage boys and all their mates come around. They’re not going to be able to break this!)
The most popular cushion colours - by far - are charcoal, followed by black. But you can get it in other colours. You can select the different cushion colours online.
Those darker colours don’t show the dirty marks much at all. That means you don’t have to worry too much about kids on there.
All the covers are removable and you can wash them anyway.
Its always a good idea to measure the space. On our web page, every piece has dimensions. You can draw it up with chalk or some newspaper, to make sure the pieces fit comfortably.
The Monte Carlo is particularly popular with the men! Women like it as well, but there’s not a single male who says they don’t like it!
Matt relayed the story of a lady that came into the store looking at outdoor lounging options. She mentioned that her husband was in another building and she would call him to come over. Matt told her: “I can tell you he’ll love the Monte Carlo. I know because I have not met a guy yet who doesn't love it.” Sure enough, once she called him over, he looked the Monte and pointed and said "that one". The lady laughed. It’s just how it goes.
It may be the solidness of it, the look of the big arms, or its rustic character. It has wide arms, you can put a beer on there. If you have more than one beer, underneath the arm, there’s a little shelf there. As a customer pointed out to Tony once, "That's where the empties go".
The arm is 15 cm wide and it’s flat. It’s like having a side table. You can put a plate on there.
People get all kinds of combinations, and you can mix and match on the Woodbury Furniture website.
The coffee table has the same width as the two-seater, and you can buy cushions that fit on the coffee table, and push it up to the two seater to make a daybed.
The coffee table and the side table can serve as ottomans. Both can have thick cushions on them.
Always the life of the party, the Monte Carlo outdoor lounge is unique, attractive and highly functional. Made from rare reclaimed teak wood acquired from old buildings, it is super comfortable and has loads of character.
“What we try to do is develop unique products; products that are exciting and different. It’s furniture which you can’t get elsewhere”, says Mathew Woodbury of Woodbury Furniture. “We make things that are unique and that have a story behind them.”
]]>“What we try to do is develop unique products; products that are exciting and different. It’s furniture which you can’t get elsewhere”, says Mathew Woodbury of Woodbury Furniture. “We make things that are unique and that have a story behind them.”
Reclaimed timber has a character all of its own. You can trace your finger over the knots of the wood that might have been around in the 1920s, when Australia was rebuilding after the first world war. You get to see right where the noggins have been in the frames.
Sitting down at a table made of reclaimed teak connects you with the past. You feel you’re part of history. In this world of smartphones with all their alerts and constant interruptions, there’s something oddly enchanting about sitting on a bench that your own great grandfather might once have worked at. “The charm of this really old teak furniture is it’s got a story behind it. It’s not just something that’s come off the production line.”
The rareness of the timber is something you can appreciate. You know it’s a piece that nobody else is going to have.I wonder how a character piece with this old-world charm sells in the middle of a classy furniture store in Castle Hill?
“It’s a rare wood”, says Mathew, with a hint of pride. “Not many companies can get this timber that we use. I know it’s a cliché, but it really does sell itself. People just look at it and they fall in love with it. You don’t have to say that much to them.”
Timber that could be from before the days of cars and phones has clearly stood the test of time. What Woodbury has done is crafted it to look completely at home in a family setting today. And as it’s teak, it’s the best wood you can get for outdoors.
“We’re always trying to create pieces that make a statement. You want something that has character and that will last.”
It’s the sort of timber that you can make an emotional connection with: something that you can appreciate a bit more when you see it in the flesh, rather than on the website.
You can connect with your own reclaimed teak table by visiting Woodbury Furniture. Call 1300 887 289 or visit their showroom at Castle Hill.
]]>The first things to think about when furnishing your outdoor area is style. What works best in the space: wood, wicker, sling or perhaps aluminium? When deciding this consider the nature of the area. Is it modern, resort like, is it a classic backyard timber deck? Try to visualise the furniture styles and colours in your space. Perhaps try to find and an image of the product in a space like yours.
Next task is to measure up and figure out how much area you want to furnish. Do you want to keep some space open or fill it all whilst considering traffic flow? Also consider how many people you would normally seat and how many you may seat when you have a larger function. Think BBQ's with friends, a party or a Christmas day lunch. If you are limited on space you may consider extending tables to meet the these needs.
A next step might be to think about the comfort of the furniture. With outdoor chairs and sofas it's important that the seat is the right size and the “rake” of the chair should have a suitable angle according to how you enjoy sitting. Do you like being upright or a little laid back? Think about the natural curves of the body as well and how your lower back will be supported.
Its important to think long term. How long will the furniture last? You don’t want to be in a position where you have to replace it after only a couple of seasons. Its tempting to opt for cheaper furniture to save money, but in the long run this approach often ends up costing more.
What about maintenance, especially if the furniture is going to be out in the open and not under cover? Teak furniture, if undercover and away from direct sun, shouldn't weather to silvery-grey. If choosing timber outdoor furniture, choose a timber that looks good weathered or un-weathered. A-grade teak weathers to a silver grey whilst other timbers weather to a muddy grey.
Another handy tip for maintaining teak, if you decide you don't like the silver look, is that you can use a high pressure hose to bring the wood back to its original colour. If choosing a wicker product choose one that has a warranty against fading and splitting.
Good luck and we wish you many hours of enjoyment outside this summer and into the future.
]]>Let us elaborate more on reclaimed teak sourced from old buildings and other structures that have been knocked down. This wood is very old and has already served another life.
At Woodbury Furniture we have been selling reclaimed teak for about 10 years. During the last 5 or 6 of those years, we have sold reclaimed teak in high volumes. We do not make dining chairs out of reclaimed teak as we prefer to use plantation teak or wicker for those items. With our application of reclaimed teak we concentrate on outdoor dining tables, sofas etc.
We have found reclaimed teak to be just as reliable and durable as plantation teak and have had minimal issues. In terms of the appearance of the wood as it ages over time, it will keep a consistent appearance if it is not getting a lot of direct sun light. If however it is getting lots of direct sun and you want to obtain the weathered look, it goes really well. As it is already rustic and raw in style, the addition of silver grey to its appearance makes it look very nice.
A timber that is already very old is likely to be very stable and solid. Well sourced reclaimed teak is not likely to encounter difficulty dealing with any particular climatic changes that may occur from one location to another.
Important things to consider are the quality of the manufacturer and the process of timber sourcing and selection. Not all pieces of reclaimed teak furniture are of equal quality. The application of a best practice manufacturing process is important. The quality of the manufacture should be evident when having a good look at the product and considering the warranty offered. The selection of timbers and testing of timbers is important with reclaimed teak as it is important to ensure all pieces have reliable structural strength. With all the reclaimed teak products at Woodbury Furniture, we kiln dry our reclaimed teak as part of the manufacturing process. Because the wood is very old, some might argue that this process in not needed, but we do this as an extra precaution to ensure the wood is stable and has appropriate moisture content.
Reclaimed teak certainly is a beautiful wood which has a lot of character. Each piece is unique. There is no need to worry about it being outside in the elements as it does really well in the most extreme conditions. Yes, it is usually a bit more expensive than plantation teak. This is largely due to the scarcity of the wood and difficulty in sourcing it. But if you have the budget and are looking for outdoor furniture pieces that are very beautiful and long lasting, then reclaimed teak is definitely a good one to consider.

]]>Making the most out of your outdoor living and dining space can really help to improve your overall lifestyle. Here we explore how you can get the best from your outdoor space all year round.
One of the biggest reasons that people don’t use their outdoor space is because it gets chilly and they have to move inside. Using outdoor heating or keeping a load of throws and comfortable blankets close to hand can make your classic furniture more comfortable all year round and will keep you outside as the temperature drops.
Using outdoor fabrics to cover your elegant furniture can make it feel warmer and cosier all year round too. Fabric can make the outdoor space feel more homely and welcoming too, encouraging you to use this space more readily.
Road noise and other unwanted sounds can be enough to drive you inside at times, but you can easily mask these sounds and create a more tranquil space by adding a running water feature. The sound of running water will mask the unwanted noises around your home and will encourage you to spend more time outside.
Having a sound system outside makes the outdoor area more practical for entertaining and relaxing in. By adding this additional entertainment system you can create a more comfortable outside space that you’ll use more.
Excess heat is another factor that’ll often drive you inside, but running from the midday sun simply leads to you sitting in a darkened room. Creating shade over your elegant furniture will, however, enable you to safely stay out all day and enjoy the tranquillity of your outdoor area.
Outdoor dining is one of the best uses of outside space and being prepared for this will mean that you’ll do it all of the time. This means having your outdoor dining area set up as well as your inside dining area so that you can dive in with minimal fuss.
The final factor in making the most of your outdoor area is lighting. With good lighting, you can enjoy this area until late in the night and make the most out of a wonderful outdoor experience all year round.
To make more of your outdoor space, browse our outdoor furniture range at Woodbury Furniture.
Creating the ideal outdoor living space in your home, which makes the outdoors feel like an extension of indoors, starts with the perfect outdoor dining set. Whether your style is elegant dining or classic furniture, rustic farmhouse or contemporary modern, your outdoor dining set should be big enough for large family gatherings, so no one feels cramped at the table.
The outdoor dining set is usually the central focus of your patio, deck or garden space, so ensuring you purchase a quality piece that will serve all of your needs is key.
In addition to the perfect dining set, adding a set of outdoor lounges goes a long way to creating a relaxing atmosphere that is truly inviting. Whether it’s wicker lounges, elegant outdoor chaises or even hanging egg chairs, nothing says comfort quite like an outdoor lounge space.
While relaxing in the sun can be a dream for a while, having no choice but to bake under the harsh Australian sun can make an otherwise gorgeous outdoor living space unbearable. If your outdoor space needs some shelter, consider adding shades or an umbrella to provide a much-needed respite from the sun.
No outdoor setting is complete without the little touches that make it home. To your table, how about adding some decorative placemats? To your lounge, add a pop of colour with some throw pillows. An outdoor rug adds the perfect dimension to even out the space. Whatever you choose to add to your living area, make sure it speaks to your style and taste.
Whether it’s teak, wicker or cane, your outdoor space is waiting for the perfect touch from you. Contact Woodbury Furniture today and try following these simple and helpful tips to blur the lines between your outdoors and indoors.
]]>If you’re asking your friends for advice about buying high-quality and beautiful outdoor furniture, one little four-letter word is likely to keep coming up – teak.
Sure, if you stroll through a showroom and ask to be shown the best teak products, there’s no way you can’t be struck by the aesthetic beauty and effortless elegance of teak wood.
But what you’ll also notice is that teak furniture also comes with a price tag. Is teak outdoor furniture really worth the spend?
We say yes. And here’s why:
Teak comes from the Tectona grandis tree, and ever since it was discovered in the tropics centuries ago, it has been selected by those with extra pennies to spend on their elegant furniture and lifestyle.
The Dutch were among the first to realise just how good teak is, exporting it from Indonesia to build sturdy exploring ships that don’t rot in the water.
A quality wood that can make sturdy ships will also make quality furniture. Teak is among the only woods on earth that contains an oil that naturally resists warping, degrading or cracking when exposed to weather and water. And that’s exactly what you need for quality outdoor furniture that lasts.
It is a sustainability industry, governments – like Indonesia’s – ensure that when a tree is felled in the teak plantations, another is planted in its place.
And reclaimed teak is also now widespread, which means that when an old teak structure is torn down, a new crop of sustainable furniture can get a new lease of life.
It’s not just rain, cold and heat that teak furniture will resist. The same natural qualities that keep out the effects of bad weather also guard teak furniture against termites and other pests.
Why buy teak? Some will tell you it’s because they bought quality teak once and never thought about outdoor furniture again. That’s because you don’t need to protect it with paint or varnish, any fading effect will be consistent and actually beautiful, and because it will last forever. Indeed, if you wander old England long enough, you’ll soon be resting your tired legs thanks to a hundred year old park bench that was once a grand teak ship. ]]>If you’re looking to update your pool furniture with something that will be long-lasting, stylish and comfortable then teak is the answer for you. Here we explore the five reasons why teak is the best pool furniture.
Teak is remarkable in its ability to withstand all types of weather. Teak contains natural oil that is repellent to water and this helps to prevent warping and cracking of the wood. Teak can withstand the broiling sun throughout the summer and will even be able to stand up to severe winter storms without any need to bring it inside.
Teak pool furniture is also resistant to pests. The oil that protects from the water is also protected from pests such as termites. Outdoor furniture made from teak will remain untouched by the critters and will last a lot longer because of this.
Pool furniture shouldn’t be a time suck; instead, it should be there to enjoy. While many outdoor furniture styles need regular maintenance, your teak furniture will not need to be varnished or painted to make it look nice. The natural wood and oils will keep it looking sleek and it can quickly be rejuvenated with a lick of natural teak oil if you desire it.
There are teak park benches in England that were made from dismantled ships and have since been sitting outside for over a century. This wood is well and truly sturdy so it will last a lifetime without any trouble. Teak pool furniture will outlive you and often even outlives the pool!
Quite simply teak pool furniture is beautiful and it will stay beautiful. When you buy teak you are buying quality and long-lasting beauty that will add a touch of style, class and comfort to your poolside. You can’t go wrong with teak as it is weatherproof, pest proof and able to stand up to the rigours of the Australian sun too.

No one seems to be entirely sure how the name mahogany originated. The most plausible suggestion seems to be that it is derived from ‘m’oganwo’, a word of West African origin later used in the West Indies to describe the trees found there. ‘Mahogany’ itself first appeared in print almost three and a half centuries ago when used by Scottish cartographer John Ogilby.
The wood itself has become a much-loved choice of so many people when selecting the finest furniture. Its famed reddish-brown colour suggests both warmth and substance, bringing a lot of style to so many uses. This distinctive hue also suggests a freshness matched with enduring elegance in so many different pieces of furniture. When this is matched with the unique texture and grain this wood offers, the results are evident and instantly recognisable to so many people.
This famed appearance is matched by mahogany’s strength and durability. While the original wood itself is rigid and difficult to bend, many of the most skilled of furniture makers love to work with it, knowing that it cuts well and sands down to that memorable grain, not to mention polishes superbly, allowing them to create unique and unforgettable pieces.
While mahogany is certainly a hugely popular present-day furniture choice, those who make that decision also appreciate how well it ages, maintaining, or more often actually increasing, its attractiveness as years pass, helped by its strong resistance to warping or other damage that softer woods might suffer.
Many years ago, American novelist J G Holland suggested that: ‘The gentleman is solid mahogany; the fashionable man is only veneer’. We appreciate his wisdom, but would counter that our mahogany furniture can be both solid and classical but also modern and thoroughly fashionable!
For you, this might be in the choice of a stunning green leather topped desk, whether to add a statement of class and permanence to a working office, or for a home study. With the addition of matching filing cabinets, bookcases or wall panelling, a vibrant interior design statement can be made.
For elegant home dining, or stunning bedroom settings, and so much more, your choice of eternal and glorious mahogany furnishings across your home can be a joy to consider. ]]>Trust is everything, whether it be talking to customers in the showroom, or organising deliveries, or assembling furniture.
Building trust with customers means following up after a sale, and addressing any concerns they might have. Trust is everything, really.
If people don’t trust you as an individual, they’re not really going to buy anything off you. You don’t really have a business.
“We try to come across as genuine and honest”, explains Matt Woodbury.
We have a family culture in Woodbury Furniture.
“I wouldn’t want anyone to lie to try to help the company in some way. I don’t think that helps at all.”
But trust isn’t just about honesty. It’s also about competence. The assurance that you can give good advice, and that you have some expertise to share.
Matt Woodbury says that Woodbury Furniture has a family culture, and that statement about the culture was developed by the staff as a collective group.
“All of it came from my staff, not from myself. They felt that way. It was something that already existed. We were trying to articulate it.”
At Woodbury Furniture we understand that our role is not purely about making money as a business. It’s also about looking after people.
We’re going to treat people well.
“Our staff generally stay for a long time. We don’t have a lot of turnover of staff, like some other businesses do. Some of our people have been there almost from the beginning.”
“I think that says something about the culture that we create.”
